The hardest tier. 21 to 24 starting clues. Expect 30 to 90 minutes, multiple stalls, and techniques that span the whole grid. Solvable by pure logic — but you'll earn every placement.
▶ Play Expert Sudoku →At 21-24 clues you're at the mathematical floor of what makes a Sudoku uniquely solvable. Every cell fights back. The techniques you mastered for hard — X-Wing, XY-Wing, Swordfish — will still fire, but they won't be enough. Expert puzzles force you into chain logic: long conditional sequences that say "if this cell is 4, then that cell must be 7, which forces another cell to not be 7, which means…"
This is the tier where Sudoku resembles a proof more than a puzzle. It also has the longest "aha" moments in all of Sudoku — the kind where a single deduction unlocks 15 cells in sequence.
Pick a cell with two candidates. Follow the consequences of each candidate separately, marking every cell that gets solved as a result. If both branches force the same cell to the same value, that value is true — regardless of which branch is correct.
A chain of cells where "strong" and "weak" inference links alternate. Strong links exist between conjugate pairs (a digit appears in only two cells of a unit). Weak links exist inside cells with two candidates. Closed loops produce eliminations across multiple units simultaneously.
A chain of bi-value cells all sharing the same two candidates {X,Y}. Every other link of the chain holds the same value. Cells seen by both ends of the chain cannot contain the alternating values — often clearing several candidates at once.
A pattern that exploits the puzzle's guaranteed unique solution. If four cells in a rectangle could form a "deadly pattern" (two solutions), at least one must have an extra candidate — and that candidate must be true. A technique that feels like cheating but is purely logical.
Advanced solvers who've conquered hard consistently. Competitive solvers training for tournaments. Puzzle purists who want grids that resist every basic technique. Long-haul thinkers who enjoy a puzzle they can actually lose to (and return to tomorrow).
If you've never tried chain logic before, spend a week on hard first. Expert rewards technique, not patience alone.
